NBA: 76ers confirm the hiring of Nick Nurse

The Philadelphia 76ers announced the hiring of former Toronto Raptors Nick Nurse as the organization’s new head coach on Thursday.

The ESPN network said on Monday that the 55-year-old pilot would be the trusted man of the Pennsylvania squad. The team welcomed the man who led the Raptors to the NBA title in 2019.

“Nick has established himself as one of the best coaches in the NBA and we are excited to welcome him to Philadelphia,” owner Josh Harris said in a statement. During his career, he has won on many levels, including on the biggest stage when he led Toronto to the championship in 2019. He is a smart, innovative and determined coach who has stood out in our process.

Nurse will have big shoes to fill, since Doc Rivers had done well at the helm of the 76ers before being surprisingly fired after the playoffs. During the past three seasons, the Sixers have maintained an excellent performance in the regular season, but each time lost in the second round of the playoffs.

“I’m honored to be named head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers, a historic franchise in a city with a long tradition of success,” Nurse said. It’s been a fun challenge to play against this group for the past five years. Now I look forward to coaching the Sixers and doing my part to deliver the goods to this great group of fans.”

Nurse coached the Raptors for five seasons, going 227-163 during that span. The Queen City team missed the playoffs in 2022-23.
