National coach Flick turns his team inside out

Stand: 02.06.2023

National coach Hansi Flick announces system change

National coach Hansi Flick starts the long preparation for the European Championship at the international matches in June – with a new system. The 58-year-old is particularly looking forward to the big anniversary against Ukraine: “It’s something special for every player.”

Ilkay Gündogan and Antonio Rüdiger are returning to the German national team for the upcoming international matches. What is more exciting, however, is which players national coach Hans-Dieter Flick does without.

OWithout Niklas Süle, Serge Gnabry, Mario Götze and also Thomas Müller, but with numerous returnees such as Antonio Rüdiger, Leroy Sané and Jamal Musiala, Hansi Flick is contesting the international three-pack before the summer break. The national coach appointed 26 players to the squad for the German national soccer team on Friday. After a break in March, Ilkay Gündogan, Julian Brandt, Jonas Hofmann and the two Leipzig players Lukas Klostermann and Benjamin Henrichs are back.

Robin Gosens from Inter Milan is also celebrating his comeback in the DFB circle, but like Manchester City’s captain Gündogan, he will be arriving late due to the Champions League final on June 10th. Goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen (FC Barcelona) and defender Thilo Kehrer (West Ham United) will also miss the team meeting in Frankfurt on June 7 due to club commitments.

After major experiments in March, Flick is changing his staff course towards the 2024 home European Championship. With the exception of Malick Thiaw from AC Milan, players without international caps are not in the squad. In contrast to offensive player Kevin Schade (FC Brentford), the young central defender will not travel to the U21s’ preparation for the European Championship tournament after the first game on June 12 in Bremen against the Ukraine.

Götze and Gnabry not there

Flick’s clear indication is that BVB defender Süle was again not taken into account, who, like in March, did not receive an invitation. His club colleague Marco Reus no longer plays a role with the national coach. Eintracht Frankfurt’s Mario Götze was not considered again after his World Cup comeback and a part-time assignment in March.

This time Serge Gnabry gets a break. The Bayern attacker was also not mentioned by name in the DFB announcement. Bayern veteran Müller’s time out for the June games had already been agreed in the spring and communicated by Flick.

Four days later, after the 1000th international match in their history against Ukraine, the DFB team will face Poland in a friendly in Warsaw. The last international match of the season takes place on June 16 in Gelsenkirchen against Colombia. At the start of the year, the national team won 2-0 against Peru in March and lost 2-3 to Belgium.
