Rafael Nadal seems out of action this season. The 22-time Grand Slam winner has undergone surgery on a muscle in his hip and is expected to be out for about five months.
Due to the recovery, everything indicates that the 37-year-old Nadal will no longer play this Grand Slam season. He already had to cancel his favorite tournament Roland Garros and Wimbledon (in July) and the US Open (in August) also seem impossible for the Spaniard.
Nadal last appeared on court in January. At the Australian Open, he suffered an injury to a muscle in his hip. The gravel specialist previously announced that he does not have a date for his return.
“Rafael will start his rehabilitation immediately after the operation,” said Nadal’s agent on Saturday. “The normal recovery process is estimated to take five months, but of course every body can react differently.”
Nadal will retire at the end of next year
Nadal has been struggling with injuries for months and seems to be aiming for a return at the start of next season. That will most likely be his last year as a professional, he announced in May. “My head still wants to, but my body has told me it can’t anymore,” he said.
The tennis legend currently holds 22 Grand Slam titles and is the record holder together with Novak Djokovic. The 36-year-old Serbian is currently active at Roland Garros and can therefore only get his hands on the record this month.
Due to his absence, Nadal dropped out of the top ten of the world rankings for the first time since 2005 in March. He is currently in 15th place and will lose even more ground in the coming months.
