Miyu Kato’s Disqualification at French Open Sparks Controversy Over Gender Double Standards

Miyu Kato caused a scandal at the French Open. After hitting a ball girl, the Japanese was disqualified.

At the side of Tim Pütz, the 28-year-old won the French Open in mixed. In the doubles competition, however, Kato was already disqualified in the round of 16. The 28-year-old had previously accidentally hit a ball girl on the neck. She now revealed to “Clay” that she might not have been disqualified if she had shot a ball boy.

“The referee and supervisor spoke to me afterwards and said, ‘If the ball kid had been a boy, it would have been okay,'” said Kato. “They also explained to me that they had to make the decision because the girl cried for more than 15 minutes. If she had stopped after five minutes, everything would have been okay,” continued the 28-year-old tennis player. A hit to the legs or arms wouldn’t have been so bad either. “But no, because it was on the neck, it was different,” Kato said.

The Japanese also fumed at opponents Marie Bouzkova and Sara Sorribes Tormo, who protested to the referee after the unintended goal, saying Kato was “disappointed”.

In Paris, however, there was a double happy ending. Kato triumphed in mixed. And also reconciled with the ball girl. The double specialist posted a joint photo. “Glad to hear you are doing well and want to continue being a prom girl,” wrote Kato, who also got the girl a gift.
