“Mercedes extends Russell’s contract and waits for signs from Hamilton”

George Russell is reportedly set to stay with the Mercedes team through at least 2025. The German racing stable would have taken the option to give him security for an extra season. However, Lewis Hamilton has not yet put his signature for after 2023.

The Spanish branch of motorsport.com already announced the news about Russell after the Spanish Grand Prix. He experienced an excellent race at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The 25-year-old driver had to start from a disappointing twelfth position on the grid, but moved forward very quickly to earn the last spot on the podium. It is his first top three finish of the season. Hamilton finished second behind winner Max Verstappen.

Option for 2025

When Russell got the seat at Mercedes, there was talk of a “long-term” partnership. It was not known until which season the Briton had signed. It would now have been a three-year contract with an option for an additional fourth year. Mercedes has reportedly taken this option now and so we would see Russell at the German racing stable until at least the end of 2025. Russell joined the team after it won eight constructors’ championships in a row, but he hasn’t really been able to challenge for the drivers’ title due to Red Bull’s dominance since the introduction of new technical regulations in 2022.
