The Mainz Athletics had to put up a lot against newly promoted Hünstetten Storm on Friday evening to win 4:3. Ultimately, it was two shots in the sixth inning that decided the match in the A’s favor. Game two takes place in Hünstetten on Saturday afternoon.

At Ballpark am Hartmühlenweg in Mainz, the Storm got off to a better start, taking the lead through Matt McElroy and a solo home run in the second inning. They made it 2-0 when Matias Polanco beat Vincente Velazquez home with a sixth-round RBI groundout.

But the Mainz team counterattacked immediately after the second shot. Single Nici Weichert, 2-run home run Thomas Joyce, Single Peter Johannessen, 2-run home run Marlon Jimenez. It was already 4:2 for the host. An error subsequently helped Hünstetten to make it 3:4. But it wasn’t enough to compensate.

Yannic Wildenhain racked up ten strikeouts in just over seven innings, giving up four hits, three runs (2 ER) and three walks. Tim Kotowski then brought the game to an end as a closer. Daniel Martins conceded the loss.
