Latvian Athletes Face Tough Competition at Judo Championships in Odivelas

Afanasyev, who competed in the weight category up to 90 kilograms, was free from the first round, but he defeated Spaniard Antonio Ramirez-Perez in the second. In the sub-group final or quarter-final, the Latvian athlete met the Italian Kristiānos Minčēzis and, suffering a facial injury, lost by “ippon”.

Afanasyev had the opportunity to continue the tournament in the satisfaction competition, but he did not go to the tatami in the next fight.

Meanwhile, Artūrs Jacenko, competing in the weight category up to 81 kilograms, lost to the Belgian Kenzo Kremers in the first round.

The competition in Odivelas will end on Saturday. Seven athletes represented Latvia in these championships.
