Mats Wieffer played for Excelsior in the Kitchen Champion Division last season, but made his breakthrough this football year at Feyenoord and made his debut in the Dutch national team. Ronald Koeman is full of praise for the midfielder.

“I first saw Wieffer during a Feyenoord training. Then I noticed that he was positioned well, his first assumption was good, his passing was solid and he read the game tactically well. I saw those qualities in the previous international match back in training with the Orange and on his debut against Gibraltar,” said the national coach.

“The same applied to his Feyenoord colleague Lutsharel Geertruida,” Koeman continues in conversation with De Telegraaf, after which he focuses again on Wieffer. “I see Wieffer together with Frenkie and a third midfielder. Marten de Roon and Joey Veerman are also eligible for his role.”
