Jan Bakelants handsomely fourteenth on debut in the toughest gravel race in the world

Jan Bakelants did not miss his debut in the popular gravel scene. De Kempenaar finished the Unbound Gravel In 10h47, one of the oldest and toughest gravel races in the United States. Home rider Keegan Swenson who made it in a sprint (!!) from a group of seven.

Rain and mud turned the 330-kilometer race into a real calvary with many casualties. Ex-winner Ted King walked more than 10 kilometers with his bicycle in hand after mechanical breakdown, Thijs Zonneveld seriously injured his knee and had to stop the fight.

Bakelants for his part drove an intelligent race. The ex-pro was spotted in fourteenth place for the first time, eventually entered the top fifteen and finished fourteenth after just under eleven hours of slogging.
