Mexico decided not to appeal and accepted the silver medal it won on Monday in artistic swimming at the San Salvador 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games.

At first it was reported that the team was seeking to reverse the title that Colombia achieved in the technical team test, a fact that was confirmed by the official page of the contest, which did not declare the gold official and maintained the protest status until yesterday morning when the result was ratified in favor of the Colombians.

María José Alcalá, president of the Mexican Olympic Committee (COM), clarified the controversy that arose. At a time when the new regulation has caused confusion, she stated that an explanation was only requested from the judges for the punishments that were assigned to the Mexican mermaids. And it is that the reformed qualification system continues to cause controversy.

From what the former diver expressed, they sought to challenge the victory, but finally the decision was different.

We asked for an explanation, that they tell us the points where they said the supposed error was so that we could analyze it and make a determination. The decision is not to appeal, Alcalá shared at the El Polvorín Sports Center.

The artistic swimming girls, with all due respect, are superior technically and in degree of difficulty, we are disconcerted by those three markings that remain 0.5 less, we respect the other team and we are in time to correct the failures and participate in the Pan American Games, he added .

The Mexican team was awarded second place, only 2.8029 units apart from the Colombians, who finished with 205.8954 points.

Shortly after, Diego Villalobos and Itzamary González achieved the fourth gold medal for synchronized swimming yesterday.

The tricolor couple reached a score of 182.7583 in a mixed free duet with a routine far superior to the second and third places occupied by Colombia and Puerto Rico, respectively.

The difference with respect to the Colombian and Puerto Rican duet was 27.9625 and 89.7500 points.

Villalobos and González this time won the game over Jennifer Cerquera and Gustavo Sánchez, who on Sunday snatched the crown in a technical duo.

In the afternoon, the Colombians once again dominated the team competition; this time in routine highlight. In the closest battle that has been presented, those led by Adriana Loftus and Ofelia Pedrero fell by less than one point; 0.8667 units separated the Mexicans from beating the South Americans.

So far, Mexico accumulates the same first places as Colombia (4). In the absence of a test, today the champion of this discipline will be defined.

In swimming, the harvest continued with a total of seven medals, in a day in which four were gold.

The first fell through Byanca Rodríguez in the 200-meter breaststroke, in a test in which her compatriot María Jiménez closed the podium. They finished with times of 2:30.56 and 2:32.82

Minutes later, María Mata (59.63) and Athenea Meneses (59.86) were not far behind and made it 1-2 in the 100-meter butterfly.

regional record

Miguel de Lara, the only swimmer with his pass to the Olympic Games, returned to achieve a new regional record for the second time in the Salvadoran capital; this time he did it in the 50-meter breaststroke. What was unusual was that he tied in time with Aruban competitor Mikel Schreuders. Both close with 27.51 seconds. For the man from Laguna, it was also his third gold medal.

The mixed 4×100 freestyle relay gave continuity to this string of good results, setting a new Central American record with 3:31.12.

José Cano, for his part, won silver in the 400-meter freestyle (3:56.44); It was the fourth medal for the athlete from Baja California. Karen Rodríguez added another one of the same color in the women’s 400 freestyle test, where she registered 4: 59.60.

Andres Dupont took bronze in the 50-meter butterfly. He clocked 24.19 seconds in a competition in which Dylan Carter from Trinidad set a new regional record (23.32).

The swimming team reached 11 golden medals and is five away from reaching the 16 they achieved in Barranquilla 2018, their best record.
