Ian Happ’s Two Home Runs Help Cubs Dominate Cardinals in MLB’s Return to London

Ian Happ hit two solo home runs, Justin Steele struck out eight and the Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 9-1 on Saturday night in the pandemic-delayed return of Major League Baseball (MLB) to the capital of England.

Happ led off the second inning with a liner to center field and lined up the pitch for Adam Wainwright over the right wall in the third inning as the Cubs won their fourth game in a row.

Chicago used a two-out series against Wainwright (3-2), who was replaced after back-to-back doubles in the fourth. The Cardinals starter allowed 11 hits, one shy of his career high, and a season-high seven runs in the shortest of his nine starts this year.

With 54,662 fans in attendance, the largest for the major leagues into the season, London Stadium was packed, some chanting “Go Cubs Go.” Chicago (37-38) has won nine of 10 and with a victory Sunday could return to .500 for the first time in a little over a month.

The Cubs had more hits (14) than strikeouts and misses (10). Nine of the hits came with two two outs.

St. Louis, last place in the National League Central at 31-45, lost for the second time in a row after a four-game winning streak.

Happ entered the game with just five home runs on the season.

Steele (8-2) allowed five hitsin six innings and struck out eight, matching his season high.

For the Cubs, the Dominican Christopher Morel 3-for-4, one run scored and one RBI. Brazilian Yan Gomes 4-2, one produced. While, for the Cardinals, Venezuelan Willson Contreras 4-0.
