Grupo México accuses Gómez Urritia of promoting a complaint against the mine in Zacatecas in the US – El Sol de México

Grupo México accused Senator Napoleón Gómez Urrutia of promoting a US complaint against the San Martín mine, in Zacatecas, for alleged denial of labor rights.

In a statement sent to the investing public, Germán Larrea’s company said that the request of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) for Mexico to review labor rights in said mine, is the product of efforts initiated by the Morena legislator with support from their allies and partners in the American trade union known as the Steel Workers.

“Gómez Urrutia presented said complaint for two reasons: first, to create and publicize a new pretext to ignore the final award that condemns him to pay 55 million dollars, plus accumulated returns since 2005, to former Cananea miners. The second, to show that he is capable of generating conflicts and pressing to obtain a new political space, at the end of his term as legislator, and thus maintain the respective jurisdiction that protects him from legal actions derived from the accusations of breaches and crimes that he faces ” says the document.

On June 16, the USTR reported on a request to the Mexican government to carry out a review of the labor situation at the San Martín mine.

The request indicates that Industrial Minera México, a subsidiary of Grupo México, resumed its activity at the mine despite the fact that its workers were on strike.

Likewise, he accused the company of negotiating with a group of workers to restart activities despite the fact that the power to represent them at a collective level is in the hands of the National Union of Mining, Metallurgical, Steel and Similar Workers of the Republic of Mexico.

Under this argument, the Inter-Institutional Labor Committee for Surveillance and Compliance of the T-MEC requested the Mexican government to file a complaint about the denial of rights to workers in said mine.

Given this situation, Grupo México assured that union freedom exists in the San Martín mine.

“It is essential to highlight that the lifting of the strike ordered by Gómez Urrutia that kept the San Martín mining unit closed for more than 11 years was the result of the free and majority decision of its workers, who in August 2018 decided by Assembly, with a vote free, direct and secret: resign from the representation of the union led by Gómez Urrutia, end the strike and immediately return to their jobs,” the statement said.

He added that after the strike was lifted, the mining unit received investments of more than 105 million dollars, produces more than 1.2 million tons of mineral each year and generates about 1,300 jobs.

“Industrial Minera México will be attentive to any information request made by the Mexican authorities regarding the relief that it is determined to give to this petition, within the framework of the T-MEC trade agreement,” the company concluded.
