Grégoire Barrere took a nice revenge. Beaten in the 1st round of Roland-Garros in five sets by Emil Ruusuvuori a few weeks ago, the Frenchman has reset the counters so to speak, even if the 1st round of Eastbourne is less important than that of a Grand Slam tournament. Nevertheless, this victory will count between the two men because of its scenario: Barrère ended up beating the Finn, 45th in the world, in three sets (3-6, 7-6, 7-6) and almost three hours (2h53 exactly), and this after having saved no less than four match points.

Everything could have ended in the tie-break of the second act when Ruusuvuori led 6 points to 5. And so it was only the beginning of the nightmare for him because after losing the next three points to see Barrère return to height, the Finn again took the lead at the start of the third set, leading 3-0. So much so that he even served for the match at 5-3, was unbroken, before getting three new match points at the raise at 6-5. The Frenchman dismissed them all before winning 7 points to 4 in the final decisive game. A remarkable effort both physically and mentally.
