Great honor for Düsseldorf’s sports elite

Philip Hebmüller from the Düsseldorf Swimming Club won gold twice at the European Para Youth Games

The DSC swimmers Birgit Tombers, Beate Schwarz, Heidi Guhl and Ursula Meyer-Tonndorf became German relay champions in their age group

Lord Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller and Stadtsportbund President Peter Schwabe honored the successful Düsseldorf athletes in the athletics hall for outstanding achievements in 2022

For national and international title successes in 2022 in Olympic and non-Olympic sports of all classes, athletes from Düsseldorf clubs were honored on Wednesday, May 31st by Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller honored in the athletics hall in the Arena Sports Park.

The athletes were able to celebrate numerous successes: 157 people were awarded for 133 titles at world, European and German championships and international tournaments in all classes in 18 Olympic and eight non-Olympic sports.

Lord Mayor Dr. Stephan Keller: “The balance sheet of the sports year 2022 was outstanding for Düsseldorf. There were exceptional national and international successes to celebrate. The title wins in 18 Olympic and eight non-Olympic sports are remarkable. This breadth in the top area illustrates the wide range of sports opportunities in our city and at the same time impressively shows how the sports city of Düsseldorf specifically promotes its athletes – right up to high-performance sport.”

Outstanding successes in Düsseldorf sport in 2022
The most successful Düsseldorf sports club is Borussia Düsseldorf. The men’s team became German champions in the table tennis Bundesliga. In wheelchair table tennis, Sandra Mikolaschek, Valentis Baus and Thomas Schmidberger have been world champions and German champions in various disciplines several times. Dan Qiu became European Champion and German Champion in men’s singles. Together with his team colleague Kay Stumper, he also became vice world champion with the German men’s team.

The Düsseldorf swimming club was also able to celebrate title wins: Philip Hebmüller won two gold, silver and bronze at the European Para Youth Games in para swimming. Maximilian Bandt became German vintage champion in 2008. In the senior class, a number of titles were also won at the European and German championships in 2022.

The 1st men’s team of the Rochusclub also became German champions in the tennis Bundesliga.

The rowers of the Düsseldorf Rowing Club and the Düsseldorf Rowing Society 1893 Water Sports Club have been German champions several times. The German Alpine Club section Düsseldorf achieved several titles at world and European championships as well as German championships with its speed climbers. The women’s team of the Düsseldorf Hockey Club became German champions in field and indoor hockey. Fortuna Düsseldorf became German champions in amputee football.
