Gold Medal Victories for Bavarian Judoka at Special Olympics World Games

Beaming faces at Alessia Schmidt (23) and Henry Unterseher (20). The two judoka from Bavaria each won gold at the Special Olympics World Games on Thursday.

And the road to victory was not easy. Marina Müller (33), head coach of the German judo team, to BILD: “You did a great job, I’m so proud. It really wasn’t easy for her. The whole hall trembled. It was a neck-and-neck race.” Both fights to the very last moment. Pending the decision of the referee.”

Schmidt and Unterseher Katarina Witt (57), two-time Olympic champion in figure skating and four-time world champion, hung the medals around their necks.

Witt is a longtime supporter of the Special Olympics movement and a member of the World Games Committee. “Getting medals as an athlete is always one of the best moments,” says Witt to BILD. “I was all the happier to have done this myself and to hand over the medals to the great judoka.”

She was out and about at the exhibition center all day and watched judo, powerlifting and basketball, among other things. Witt: “The atmosphere here is great. I enjoy them very much.”

Witt also wants more integration and inclusion in everyday life: “Society must be much more open to people with disabilities. They are achievers. And we have to treat them as equals.”

Even the competition is amazed! THIS final sprint will knock your socks off
