(07.06.2023) From Monday, June 12th to Thursday, June 15th, the sports city of Frankfurt will host the largest delegation taking part in the Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023. The Indian athletes and their coaches and companions can expect a diverse program in the Main metropolis.

In the run-up to the World Games, Frankfurt is one of 216 host towns and thus part of the largest municipal inclusion project in the history of the Federal Republic.

On Tuesday, June 13 and Wednesday, June 14 – the two full days of the Special Olympics Host Town Program – participants will have the opportunity to get to know Frankfurt and its culture. At the same time, the main aim of the program is to draw attention to the world’s largest sports movement for people with mental and multiple disabilities. This is intended to strengthen the self-confidence of the athletes, recognition and social participation.

“It is a special honor to welcome such a large and diverse Indian delegation to Frankfurt. Even if there is a lot of talk about what an inclusive and barrier-free city can look like, in practice this is not yet a matter of course for many people. People with disabilities of all kinds therefore often encounter challenges in everyday life,” says Lord Mayor Mike Josef. He continues: “This program leading up to the Special Olympics World Games is the best example of inclusion in action and a great opportunity to think outside the box and to rethink the patterns we are used to. So there was absolutely no question that we would take part in the Special Olympics Host Town Program.”

In addition to an “Olympic” torch relay followed by a reception by Lord Mayor Josef in the Römer, the program includes an optional tour of the old town or a visit to Frankfurt’s museums and a final event at the Gut Hausen estate of the Lebenshilfe Frankfurt am Main.

In preparation for the World Games in Berlin, the athletes also have the opportunity to train in the Brentanobad and the Hausen outdoor pool, in the stadium at the Brentanobad, in the sports and leisure center in Kalbach, on the Kalbach golf range and at the Preungesheim sports facility. Badminton, soccer, judo, rhythmic gymnastics and swimming are among the 26 sports planned for competition at the Special Olympics World Games.
