Former Manchester United Defender Rio Ferdinand Reflects on Record-breaking Transfer and Stellar Career

Ferdinand, 44, joined Manchester United in 2002 when the club paid Leeds United €44 million for him. The transfer was a record – Ferdinand became the most expensive English player and also the most expensive defender in the world.

“Let’s imagine how much I would pay now. 120 million? No, that’s too little. My price today would be 200 million euros. My salary would be 500,000 euros a week,” Ferdinand told the Manchester Evening News.

Ferdinand won six league titles, one UEFA Champions League and three League Cups while playing for Manchester United.

He played 81 games for the England national team, scoring three goals.

Many football experts consider Ferdinand to be one of England’s best defenders of all time.
