FIFA postpones search for 2030 World Cup venue

FIFA’s search for the 2030 World Cup venue will have to wait a bit longer due to delays in agreeing on campaign rules and the final vote.

Voting by FIFA’s more than 200 affiliated federations was moved to the last quarter of 2024 instead of the September meeting next year.

The rules for the bids will be defined at a FIFA Council meeting before the end of October, soccer’s governing body said.

One of the potential bids for the 48-team tournament in 2030 reportedly dropped out this week when a Greek outlet reported that Saudi Arabia withdrew from its project with Egypt.

South America also wants to host the Centenary World Cup. The candidacy would be between the headquarters of 1930, Uruguay, as well as Argentina, Chile and Paraguay.

FIFA indicated on Friday that “the postponement pursues the objective of expanding consultations with the main interest groups.”
