Fencing: French swordsmen European champions, foil fencers in silver

The harvest of medals continues in Poland. The French sabers won Wednesday in Krakow the gold medal of the European Fencing Team Championship by overcoming Italy, whose women’s foil team had beaten the French in the final a little earlier.

After a thrilling final, the French sabers Sébastien Patrice, Maxime Pianfetti, Boladé Apithy and Tom Seitz snatched the victory from the Italians 45 touches to 42. It was the young Sébastien Patrice, 23, who carried the last touch on the Italian Luigi Samele.

Romain Cannone and the swordsmen expected this Friday

A few minutes earlier, the women’s foil team final opposed the same two nations. But this time, it was the Italians who overcame the French (45-40). Anita Blaze, Morgane Patru, Pauline Ranvier and Ysaora Thibus had to settle for the silver medal.

The competition continues. Romain Cannone, individual gold medalist in Tokyo, will compete this Friday with the French swordsmen.
