El Económico – The José Veral sports center will host the first Spanish 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball Championship

The José Veral sports center in Puerto de Sagunto will be the venue for the first 3×3 Spanish Wheelchair Basketball Championship next Saturday, June 10, starting at 10 am. The objective of this competition is to promote and make visible sport for people with disabilities.

This competition is a pioneer sporting event in the national territory that has been organized by the Spanish Federation of Sports for People with Physical Disabilities (FEDDF), the Association of Assistance and Inclusive Sports of Valencia (ADIV) and the CB L’Horta Godella. The department of Physical Activity, Health and Sports of the Sagunto City Council has also collaborated in the organization of the first 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball Spanish Championship.

The tournament presentation ceremony took place in the plenary hall of the Town Hall with the participation of the mayor, Darío Moreno, and the Councilor for Physical Activity, Health and Sports, Javier Timón. The presentation of the championship was also attended by the president of ADIV and head of CB L’Horta Godella, Víctor Carnero, and the local athlete who will compete with ADIV Sagunto, César Cervantes.

Víctor Carnero has given the “thank you in capital letters” to this government team: “Since we started a few years ago the commitment to make adapted sports known as a method of inclusion for people with physical and intellectual disabilities, the Sagunto City Council has been a fundamental and main collaborator that has always been actively by our side”. Likewise, the president of ADIV and head of CB L’Horta Godella thanked the participating sports groups: «The teams that compete belong to four different autonomous communities and among them AD FDI and UCAM Murcia stand out, with players from the division of honor and some of them with international recognition such as Lalo Prieto».

Darío Moreno stressed that, although the competition will surely have an economic and tourist impact, the main objective of this sporting event is to make wheelchair basketball visible. The mayor has also shown his gratitude to the organizations that have promoted the tournament and has described the first Spanish 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball Championship as “A wonderful initiative that fits into the philosophy of the Sagunto City Council”.

As stated by the Councilor for Physical Activity, Health and Sports, Javier Timón, “It is a very attractive type of game that, globally, has been promoted by the International Basketball Federations (FIBA) and Wheelchair Basketball Federations (IWBF) with the aim of continuing to promote its growth as the most popular urban sport in the world”. Likewise, Javier Timón has invited the public to attend the José Veral Sports Center to enjoy a “magnificent spectacle”.

The first Spanish 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball Championship is an inclusive sporting event, so athletes with disabilities and players without disabilities in wheelchairs can participate. A total of sixty players divided into six teams will participate, including ADIV Sagunto. This sports formation, created specifically for the occasion and in which the athlete from Sagunto, César Cervantes, will play, will play at least five matches.

ADIV Sagunto’s first match will be at 10:30 am against ADIV Godella. At 10:55 am the local team will face AD ​​FDI and against ADIV CB L’Horta Godella at 11:45 am. After noon, ADIV Sagunto will play another two matches against Miarco Petraher BSR (1:25 p.m.) and UCAM BSR Murcia 3X3 (1:50 p.m.).

In the afternoon, ADIV Sagunto will play its last regular match against CE Costa Daurada and, in the event of being among the first four teams, it will play one last match. The last two matches of the championship to be held at the José Veral Sports Center correspond to the match between the third and fourth classified at 6:30 p.m. and the match between the first and second classified at 6:30 p.m.
