Novak Djokovic has won his 23rd Grand Slam title at Roland Garros. This makes him the most successful male tennis player of all time.

Over the past two weeks, Djokovic has shown who is the best in the world on Rafael Nadal’s domain. In the final he had no child against the fourth seeded Casper Ruud (7-6, 6-3, 7-5).

Due to the absence of gravel king Nadal, the overall victory may have had a little less shine. After all, the fourteen-time winner is recovering from hip surgery and was therefore unable to defend his title.

Semifinal against Alcaraz

But fitness is also a quality on the grueling tennis calendar, the now 36-year-old Djokovic showed all the more at Roland Garros. In the semi-finals, the Spanish crown prince Carlos Alcaraz, placed first in Paris, had to give in due to cramp.

And in the final, fourth-placed Ruud had little to say, although the Norwegian took the lead in the first set due to an early break.

However, the old Djokovic slowly warmed up and made a number of points of an unprecedented high level. From long rallies, the Serb carefully maneuvered himself into the right positions to strike hard. In the seventh game he missed an easy smash, but Ruud did the same afterwards.

After that rebreak, the set went to a tiebreak, which was won by Djokovic (7-1) with a great display of power. And also early in the second set, that monotonous game image continued to 3-0.

Ruud kept his serve, but could not break Djokovic anymore. In the third set, the Norwegian led 4-3 and 0-30, but Djokovic had the luck of the champion with a crucial point via the net.

Ruud yields in the final third set

After seventeen games in a row without breaks, Ruud was the first to give way after a few powerful passes from Djokovic. The game after that, the Serbian simply served out the game.

Djokovic is now the only man ever to win all Grand Slam tournaments at least three times.

Ten times the Australian Open. Roland-Garros three times. Seven times Wimbledon. Three times the US Open. And the counter is still running.

That goes for another record. Next Monday, Djokovic will again be number one in the world. For the 388th week, he leads the ATP ranking. That is almost a year and a half longer than Roger Federer, the number two in that ranking.

And the discussion whether Djokovic is actually the best ever continues.
