Cycling: Jonas Vingegaard crushes the Critérium du Dauphiné three weeks before the Tour de France

The Dane has already warmed up his wheels for the Grande Boucle. Less than three weeks before the start of the Tour de France, Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma) finished second in the eighth and final stage between Le Pont-de-Claix and La Bastille behind Giulio Ciccone (Trek-Segrafredo), and thus won the Critérium du Dauphiné ahead of Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) and Ben O’Connor (AG2R Citröen) for the first time in his young career.

The Tour de France title holder could even have won his third stage of the week, thanks to a big acceleration less than a kilometer from the finish on the final climb to the Bastille (1.8km at 14.2% ). Not enough, however, to worry the Italian, who won with a 23-second lead.

A nice 5th place for Martin, Alaphilippe puts on a show

Julian Alaphilippe has also shown that he has legs. Seventh overall before the race, the Frenchman was part of the breakaway, which took off 141km from the finish, with Ciccone, Champoussin, Bonnamour and Campenarts. By taking a two-minute lead, he was even virtually second in the standings halfway through the race, before breaking down at the end of the ascent of the Col de Porte. The double world champion finally finished 14th in the stage.

Note the nice fifth place of Guillaume Martin, first Frenchman this Sunday, 54 seconds behind Ciccone. The Cofidis rider finished sixth overall. A good omen to prepare for his Tour de France.
