Due to the respectable success, the climbing specialist of the Belgian Intermarché team also did some self-promotion three weeks before the Tour de France. Tour champion Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark remains overall leader in the yellow jersey.
“I still can’t really believe it”
The 25-year-old Zimmermann pulled away slightly from a group of three about a kilometer from the finish and won in an exhausting final act ahead of Frenchman Mathieu Burgaudeau. Third was the Spaniard Jonathan Castroviejo. “I still can’t really believe it, I just did my best,” said Zimmermann on Eurosport. He is the 19th German in the history of the stage race to win a day.
On Saturday, two mountains of the highest category await the pros on the 147.9 kilometer section between Porte-de-Savoie and Col de la Croix de Fer. The tour ends on Sunday in the southeastern city of Grenoble.
