Colombian cyclist Germán Chaves and his father die after being run over by a truck

Colombian cycling is in mourning. The runner Germán Chaves has died after being hit by a truck while training on a road in the department of Cundinamarca. The young man, who was doing a session with his father when they were hit by the vehicle. Germán lost his life instantly, while his father later died at the La Sabana Clinic in Chía.

Chaves, born in Chocontá (Cundinamarca) on March 9, 1995, trained at Club Deportivo Boyacá de Tunja, and was part of the Coldeportes-Zenu-Claro and EPM-Scott teams, although he currently ran with Team Sistecrédito .

“‘Chavito’ leaves us with a deep void, and he will always be remembered for his professionalism, kindness, simplicity and nobility,” said the Colombian Cycling Federation (FCC) in a statement, from which he sent “on behalf of the great family of cycling» a message of solidarity for the family.

The news impacted the world of Colombian sports and other areas. Even the president, Gustavo Petro, pointed out that he met “Germán being mayor”, in reference to his period as head of the Bogotá Mayor’s Office, and sent his “deepest condolences”.

The 28-year-old cyclist was third in the youth classification in the 2014 Tour of Colombia; third in the youth classification in the Tour de San Luis in Argentina, in 2015; runner-up in the Sub-23 category of the time trial at the 2017 National Road Races; and in that same year he won the first stage of the Youth Tour that ended in Riosucio.

In addition, in 2018 he was second in the youth classification in the Vuelta a Aragón and third in the mountains of the Comunidad de Madrid Cycling Tour, while in Colombia he won the Vuelta a Boyacá title. In May of this year he had achieved the title of the Fusagasugá Classic.
