Charles Vanhoutte Joins Union SG: Impressed by Club’s Approach and Commitment

Union SG strengthened itself with Charles Vanhoutte. The Cercle Brugge player is impressed by the way of working with the people of Brussels.

No KAA Gent for Charles Vanhoutte, but a deal with Union SG. He received a firm explanation from the club why they were very keen to bring him in. “I was first given a tour of the complex in Lier. Then we watched a video about how Union wants to play. That was with Chris O’Loughlin and Gauthier Carton. They don’t go ice overnight with transfers,” Vanhoutte tells Het Nieuwsblad.

Vanhoutte made a striking discovery. “I found out that they had a 41-page file on my private life. They not only look at the sporting qualities of a player, but also whether he fits into the group as a personality. What did they know? That I am writing a bachelor’s thesis about how underprivileged young people with a different ethnicity can be integrated into youth football. I thought it was a punishment that they had dug so deep.”

On a sporting level, he was mainly chosen for his winning mentality and grinta. “They only go for players who really want to play for Union, they don’t waste time with increasingly higher counter proposals. The other options? Ghent wanted to, but that never became concrete. And I read that I was on the list at Anderlecht. I did not know. Apart from that, sometimes I think clubs cough up seven million too quickly for a player that you can also find with us.
