Bublik Surpasses Zverev at ATP Halle Semi-Finals

Bublik got off to a better start. The Kazakh served excellently, capitalized on Zverev’s weaknesses and took the service game from Hamburg to make it 3-1.

After 35 minutes, the world number 48 made it. deservedly the movement perfect. Bublik hit twice as many winners (14:7) and made fewer unforced errors (5:6).

The 26-year-old was – as expected – an extremely uncomfortable and strong opponent. Bublik plays “very consistently and well, probably his best tennis this year,” Zverev said before the semifinals.

The Olympic champion himself complained again and again and was visibly dissatisfied with his game – especially after he missed a breakball in the second set at 3: 2. “I gave up my service game too easily in the first set, but had hardly any chances on his serve. He served at 230 km/h, so I hardly touched the balls,” said Zverez.

Zverev at a loss: “I have no idea”

He kept fighting, fending off two break chances in the seventh game.

The (preliminary) decision was made when the score was 5:5. Zverev had to give up his service game before Bublik served the match home. “I have no idea what I should have done differently. I sat with my coaching team after the match, we were all at a loss,” Zverev summed up.

Bublik wants the title: “Job is not done yet”

The victorious Bublik does not want to rest on his laurels in the semifinals. “The job isn’t done yet. I’m happy, but I’m trying to keep my focus,” said the Kazakh. “It’s always tough against Sascha, but I was luckier in the key moments. You always have to use all your weapons against a player like him, and that worked.”

Unnecessary tweener? Zverev outwitted by Bublik

Zverev, who has won 19 tournaments on the tour so far, has to wait for the first tournament win on grass. Despite the elimination, the 26-year-old was completely convincing in Halle and can optimistically go to the grass classic in Wimbledon, which begins on July 3rd.
