Brazil approves the ‘Vini Jr’ law, which allows parties to be interrupted in case of racism

The deputies of the Rio de Janeiro Assembly have approved this Tuesday the State Policy ‘Vini Jr‘ Combating Racism in Stadiums and Sports Arenas that provides for the interruption and even the closure of sporting events in the event that racist acts are committed, after the insults that the Real Madrid player has suffered in LaLiga matches.

The text contemplates that, in the event of a racist complaint or demonstration, the game is interrupted for as long as the organizer of the event or the party delegate considers it necessary, while racist attitudes persist.

These measures are part of the ‘Protocol to Combat Racism’, in which any citizen can report racist conduct to any authority present in the stadium: firefighters, police or security guards. The complaint must be sent to the organization of the event and to the authorities, including the Alerj Commission to Combat Discrimination and the Police Station for Racial Crimes and Intolerance (Decradi), reports the newspaper ‘O Globo’.

This rule has to be promulgated by Rio de Janeiro Governor Cláudio Castro, within 15 days. Deputy Professor Josemar, author of the bill, stressed that it is “the first legislative chamber in the country to approve a bill to combat racism in stadiums.”

“This is a source of pride not only for my mandate, but for the Legislative Assembly of the State of Rio de Janeiro. We have to eradicate once and for all this cancer of Brazilian society that is racism,” he added.

In addition, the Assembly has approved the delivery of the Tiradentes medal, the highest distinction of the house, to the footballer of the Brazilian team.
