Bonn District Triumphs in Rematch at Judo North Rhine Cup

The last Judo North Rhine Cup was in 2018, back then for the U15 age group. The district selection Bonn around district trainer Aabrao Dias lost the semifinals against the merged districts of Essen and Duisburg as well as the district of Rhein-Ruhr by a narrow margin of 7:9 due to sometimes controversial decisions.

4 years later they met again in Meerbusch for the North Rhine Cup, which was now held for the U13 age groups. Just like back then, the teams consisted of girls and boys from different clubs in the respective districts. Fighting was always alternately a boys weight class and then a girls weight class. A team consisted of 16 fighters. The districts of Bonn, Rhein-Ruhr and Niederrhein fought in one pool for the semi-finals, in the other pool the districts of Cologne, Wuppertal, Bergisch Land and Düsseldorf.

The semifinals from 2018 were repeated in the first fight. The revenge was impressive. The Bonn team won 12:4 and took the first step into the semifinals. Against the team from the Lower Rhine, Bonn won even more clearly. With 13:3 they secured the semifinals.

It was more exciting in the other pool, because the districts of Cologne, Düsseldorf and Bergisch Land fought in circles. Eventually Cologne finished second and had to play against the first from the other pool; these were the people of Bonn.

In the other semi-final stood Rhein Ruhr and Bergisch Land.

The people of Bonn made it into the final against Bergisch Land with a score of 10:6. This district was also strengthened and the geographic line extended to include Leverkusen.

The exciting, emotionally charged and frenetically fueled finale began with two victories for the Bergisch Land district. After that, the Bonn team won three fights in a row and took the lead. But already in the next fight the opponents equalized to 3:3, because the Bonn fighter was disqualified because of an alleged illegal act. Neither the judges nor the upset opponents could be convinced that the Bonn woman was not guilty of anything, but that the opponent had provoked the action through misconduct. It’s a pity, but then the guys from Bonn scored in a weight class that they hadn’t actually occupied by “pushing up” a fighter and the score was 4:3. The girls’ weight class also went to Bonn to 5:3. Then it happened in quick succession. The opponents shortened to 5:4, the Bonn team followed suit to make it 6:4. Also in the next, unoccupied weight class, the high-ranked girl from Bonn scored 7:4. When the next fighter from Bonn took the lead to 8:4, victory was pretty close and was secured in the next fight by a hard-fought victory for the Bonn fighter. Although the opponents got the point in the penultimate weight class to 9:6, the Bonners had a hot iron in the fire in the last weight class with the North Rhine Champion U13 and Vice West German Champion U15 and since the victory of the Bonners was already in the towel, the point to 10:6 was only important on paper.

District coach Abrao Dias can’t remember how many times the district of Bonn has won North Rhine-Westphalia. “I think we were always in the final for 5 years and when we lost against Rhein Ruhr in 2018, you knew that you had to join forces to beat us from Bonn,” remarked Dias with a wink.
