Beverly Ramos and Raúl Ríos are the standard bearers for San Salvador 2023

San Juan. Olympic long-distance runner Beverly Ramos and sailor Raúl Ríos were selected on Wednesday night as the first couple of flag bearers for a delegation from Puerto Rico that will compete in the Central American and Caribbean Games, by majority vote at a plenary meeting of the Olympic Committee of Puerto Rico (COPUR) held at the Olympic House, Old San Juan.

The highest representatives of Puerto Rican athletes will parade with the monostar at the Opening Ceremony on June 23 at the Jorge “El Mágico” González National Stadium in San Salvador.

“Puerto Rico has always had a great demonstration of flag bearers in the Central American Games, Pan American Games and Olympic Games. This will not be the exception. The standard bearers for San Salvador 2023 are Beverly Ramos and Raúl Ríos”, announced the president of COPUR, Sara Rosario.

The plenary quorum was 37 delegates. The President of COPUR abstained from the vote.

The COPUR Executive Committee chose last Monday the three finalists by gender to be flag bearers of the Puerto Rican Delegation, which will compete in the XXIV Central American and Caribbean Games San Salvador 2023. The chosen athletes were: Beverly Ramos (athletics), Pamela Rosado (basketball), Karla Claudio (softball), Jean Pizarro (archery), Daniel González (table tennis) and Raúl Ríos (sailing).

This will be the first Delegation in the Central American and Caribbean Games where two standard-bearers will present themselves, complying with the rule stipulated by the International Olympic Committee of choosing a female and a male. In the Barranquilla 2018 edition, the standard bearer of the monostar was the former Olympic swimmer Vanessa García. The first time that Puerto Rico had two flagship athletes was for the Tokyo Olympics with tennis players Adriana Díaz and Brian Afanador.

As historical data, in the 1935 and 2002 Games in San Salvador, the standard-bearers were the pole vaulter Manuel Luciano from Ponce and the pitcher Wilfredo “Cano” Vélez. Luciano was the first bearer of the single-starred flag, since in the 1930 Havana Games Puerto Rico paraded with the flag of the United States. For his part, Vélez became the first player to carry the national badge in regional fairs.

This Thursday there will be the presentation of the flag bearers and the Delegation, at 4:00 in the afternoon at Vivo Beach Club in Isla Verde, Carolina.

The standard bearers of the delegations since the debut of Puerto Rico in the Central American and Caribbean contest in Havana, Cuba 1930 are: Juan Juarbe Juarbe (athletics, Havana 1930), Manuel Luciano (athletics, San Salvador 1935), Rodrigo Otero Sur (basketball, Panama 1938), Fernando Torres (athletics, Barranquilla 1946), Fernando Torres (athletics, Guatemala 1950), Robert Santana (weightlifting, Mexico 1954), Jaime Loyola (shot, Caracas 1959), Teo Colon (athletics, Kingston 1962), Ramon Rosario (athletics, San Juan 1966), Carmen Rosa Sabater (volleyball, Panama 1970), Jaime “Mameyes” Santiago (shot, Santo Domingo 1974), diana rodriguez (athletics, Medellín 1978), Angelita Lind (athletics, Havana 1982), Jorge “Peco” González (athletics, Santiago 1986), Pink Glory (archery, Mexico 1990), Ralph Rodriguez (shot, Ponce 1993), Ricardo Busquets (swimming, Maracaibo 1998), Wilfredo “Cano” Velez (baseball, San Salvador 2002), Ineabelle Diaz (taekwondo, Cartagena 2006), Jose Juan Barea (basketball, Mayagüez 2010), Aura Cruz (volleyball, Veracruz 2014) and Vanessa Garcia (swimming, Barranquilla 2018).
