Belgian Winger Toumani Camara Sets Sights on 2023 NBA Draft

The name of the winger is however little known to the general public in Belgium. Quite simply because he left the country very young. After starting basketball in U10 in a club in Boitsfort, followed by a stint in Woluwe, Toumani Camara crossed the Atlantic at the age of 16. Two summers later, his potential caught the eye of some 30 universities at an Adidas tournament. This allowed him to join the college of Georgia initially (2019-2021), then that of Dayton (2021-2023).

Endowed with an irreproachable work ethic, the winger of 2.03 m crossed the levels during his four years in the NCAA. Until becoming a leader on the field, as evidenced by his line of statistics in 2022-2023: 13.9 points and 8.6 rebounds on average per game. Even if his team missed access to the final tournament of the March Madness, his performances did not go unnoticed in the eyes of NBA recruiters.

At the end of April, Toumani Camara announced via his Instagram account his decision to start as a professional and therefore registered for the 2023 NBA Draft. There followed 18 workouts (training-tests) in 16 NBA franchises as well as an invitation to the very select “Draft Combine”, reserved for around seventy suitors.

“My qualities ? Defense and rebound mainly. I compare myself a bit to a player like Jarred Vanderbilt, of the Lakers, who brings a lot of energy to the courts,” said this big fan of Dwyane Wade, interviewed after training at the Golden State Warriors. Adding that “the NBA has always been his biggest dream”.

And this has become reality for the young man from Brussels…
