Australian Alex De Minaur Advances to Queen’s Final with Convincing Victory over Holger Rune

Alex De Minaur was far too solid to be pushed around by Holger Rune. In the Queen’s semi-final, the Australian demonstrated the full extent of his talent to dispose of the Dane, still too inexperienced on grass, in two sets (6-3, 7-6(2)). A victory full of confidence which will give him the right to play for the first time in the final of this tournament against Carlos Alcaraz or Sebastian Korda this Sunday.

Wiper, lob and volley: De Minaur’s spectacular point against Rune

Recent tournament results might have suggested that Holger Rune had favorite status heading into this encounter. Especially since De Minaur had not chained two victories since the beginning of March at the Acapulco tournament. But on a surface as special as grass, knowledge and adaptation count. And De Minaur knows more about this surface than the young Dane.

Rune was too fair

First game of the match and entry break for De Minaur who didn’t have much to do to force Rune into a foul. A white break which was then converted by the Australian which will leave almost no room for maneuver on the rest of the first inning. Excellent behind his serve, very often carried forward with volleys played with accuracy, De Minaur did not let Rune breathe. And even if some shots from the Dane could annoy his opponent of the day, his ignorance of the subject will however have been fatal to him.

Wiper, lob and volley: De Minaur’s spectacular point against Rune

After this break, Rune never managed to equalize, nor even to obtain a single break point against the solidity of the Australian face-off. Worse, Rune also conceded a last break to lose this first set 6-3.

The Dane attacked this second round with more spirit, more panache. He even got a break point in De Minaur’s first game, but he failed to convert it, like all the others during this match. The two players then neutralized each other with winning serves and volleys, leaving no gap throughout the second set.

Rune could have broken his opponent when he got two chances at 5-5, but like from the start of the match, De Minaur secured his first ball to get out of this situation. The match finally ended with an almost perfect tie-break from the Australian who did not have to force much to win it 7-2. This victory is good for De Minaur.
