The Atlanta Falcons signed offensive lineman Matthew Bergeron to a rookie contract on Tuesday.

The Quebecer’s four-year contract is worth a total of $8.97 million and will account for $1.63 million on payroll next season.

The Falcons had traded their 44th and 110th overall picks in order to have the opportunity to select Bergeron 38th overall, in the second round of the last draft.

A tackle with Syracuse in the college ranks, Bergeron was employed as a left guard during the team’s mini rookie camp in May. After working as a guard at the Senior Bowl, the Falcons were considering bringing him more inside.

“It’s built for that,” said head coach Arthur Smith. “He’s an intelligent player, and the way he plays, that’s where you see him. »

Despite his lack of repeats in this position, Bergeron could seriously fight for a starting spot next season. He is likely to have Matt Hennessy, who has played in this position on some occasions in 2022, for competition.
