ZDF reporter Béla Réthy retired at the World Cup in Qatar. The semi-final was his last game as a commentator. Now the 66-year-old returns to the screen again. For Amazon Prime.

Dhe longtime ZDF reporter Béla Réthy returns to the screen. At the end of 2022, the long-time ZDF commentator retired. His last appearance was in the semi-finals of the World Cup in Qatar in the game between France and Morocco.

Now football fans will hear Réthy’s famous voice again. The 66-year-old will be the narrator in the documentary All or Nothing: The Qatar National Team, which will be released on Amazon Prime Video later this year. It is produced by Amazon Studios in association with Ufa Documentary and in co-production with Stereo Films. An exact broadcast date has not yet been set.

In four episodes, it takes a look behind the scenes of the DFB team before and during the tournament in Qatar. However, the World Cup did not go particularly well: as is well known, the national team was eliminated in the preliminary round. But this does not mean that the documentary is boring. After all, there were enough topics.

Réthy announces “very emotional and honest journey”.

Réthy emphasizes: “Never before and during a World Cup have there been so many controversial discussions as this time in Qatar – and not only about the sporting side, but above all about things off the pitch. I was very pleased to receive the request from Prime Video and Ufa to experience this special World Cup, which was my last as a ZDF commentator, from a completely different perspective. The viewers can look forward to a very emotional and honest journey, which, under the direction of Christian Twente, offers a more differentiated view than the media discussions and TV pictures from last winter conveyed.”

For Réthy it is the first TV job after his time on ZDF. “We are very proud that we were able to win one of the most renowned sports commentators in Germany for this project in Béla Réthy,” says Philip Pratt, Head of German Originals for Prime Video. “From the point of view of many fans, the sporting course of the tournament in Qatar was disappointing and they ask themselves: How could such a catastrophe ever happen again after 2018? But that is precisely what makes the look behind the scenes particularly worth seeing.”
