After insulin vortices at the French Open around Zverev: Paris makes a decision

Decision about Zverev in Paris

Quarterfinals! Zverev continues to soar

Alexander Zverev criticized the way the organizer of the French Open dealt with his insulin disease. He now made a decision on how the Olympic champion should handle his syringes during the match.

Tennis Olympic champion Alexander Zverev can also give himself insulin injections on the court in the upcoming matches at the French Open.

The tournament organizers confirmed this to SID on Tuesday. In his round of 16 match, Zverev was confused about the procedure. The type 1 diabetic wanted to give himself an insulin injection on Monday evening, but initially didn’t know exactly how to proceed.

“I told the referee that there had to be a clear structure. Then that’s no problem at all, ”said Zverev at first Eurosport. Now his wish has been granted. The organizers also stated that he would have been allowed to do this on Monday evening.

Zverev diabetic since childhood

If the diabetic tennis Olympic champion goes into the dressing room for this, do not count this as one of two possible bathroom breaks. On the ATP tour, the players are entitled to one toilet break and from the fifth set onwards a second one. According to his own statement, Zverev would have to inject himself four or five times per game in extreme cases.

“I’ve been diabetic since I was three and a half years old – that’s nothing new, I’ll do it my whole life,” Zverev said. “That means that certain things that are necessary for my life are not allowed. If I don’t inject myself, my life will be in danger.”

The 26-year-old reported that his procedure occasionally led to strange comments from officials. “They say it looks like I’m doping,” he said.

Zverev made his type 1 diabetes public in 2022 and founded a foundation called the “Alexander Zverev Foundation”. He regularly gives himself insulin injections during his games.

At the French Open he reached the quarter-finals on Monday evening and will meet there on Wednesday from around 3 p.m. as a high favorite against Argentinian Tomas Martin Etcheverry (LIVE in the ticker SPORTS1).
