15 years of passion for Palencia Basketball

15 years ago, the then Faymasa Palencia played in the LEB Plata in the 2008/09 campaign. Times seem very far away, but there was already a group of purple faithful with many things in common, although one above all: their passion for Palencia Basketball. That season was historic for the club. In addition to winning the Adecco LEB Silver Cup against Hospitalet, the schoolboys were proclaimed league champions to, consequently, be promoted to LEB Oro. A special course for Palencia Basketball and for Peña Basket Morao. Because yes, that group of stalwarts from Palencia proudly carry that name. And yesterday, looking back, the peñistas emotionally remembered the path they had traveled together. Many games, many previous ones, many trips, many moments. In short, endless memories lived by and thanks to his Palencia Basketball.

The Hotel Rey Sancho in the capital hosted yesterday the Peña Basket Morao gala, on the occasion of awarding the XIV Urko Otegui Trophy, which rewards the best Palencia Basketball player of the season, according to the votes of fans and the media after each game in the pavilion. The winner was none other than the Zunder captain, Chumi Ortega, who finished in first place in the standings with 34 points. Close behind were Alec Wintering, second with 30 and Tanner McGrew, third with 29.

The act was led by Alberto Moreno, a journalist from Diario Palentino and La 8 Palencia, who acted as master of ceremonies. He was in charge of presenting the gala, at the beginning of which the first of the draws took place, in which the winners were presented with the portrait signed by all the players and the coaching staff of Zunder Palencia.

Then Urko Otegui, the club’s current sports director and one of the entity’s legends, who gives the trophy its name, took the floor. “For us season ticket holders are always a very important support and that is why they have priority in tickets for the Final Four,” Otegui asserted.

Later, a video was projected that reviewed the 15-year history of the supporters club, which led to the second of the draws. Later, Pedro Rivero went through the microphone, where he was asked about the most absolute news. “Without thinking about the final against Burgos before the semifinal against Valladolid, it will be Valladolid who plays against Burgos,” he assured.

After the intervention of the Segovian coach, the third draw took place and, immediately after, the most anticipated moment of the afternoon. Two small peñistas were in charge of awarding Chumi Ortega the trophy, which he received to the resounding applause of those present. The captain also expressed himself. “It’s a pleasure for me to be on the list of winners of this trophy, surrounded by so many good players.”

Once the main course of the afternoon was over, the last of the gifts was raffled. Finally, the attendees were able to enjoy an aperitif accompanied by the Zunder Palencia staff and coaching staff, who attended the event in full. Many stories were remembered there, and it is that 15 years are enough for many lived anecdotes. For another 15 years of Basket Morao.
