“Your daughter is missing this week”: Toby Alderweireld sues distasteful messages he received after Antwerp-Genk

After his club’s victory against Racing Genk, Antwerp defender Toby Alderweireld has had to deal with numerous distasteful reports. “Your daughter has been missing this week,” someone writes, for example.

Alderweireld heralded the turnaround for Antwerp against Racing Genk on Sunday by shooting 1-1 from the penalty spot at a 0-1 score. After that, Antwerp even won, so that it jumps to first place in the ranking.

The frustration about that defeat against Alderweireld’s team was clearly high among Racing Genk supporters, because one of them even proceeded to send distasteful messages to the former Red Devil on Instagram. “Your daughter is missing this week,” she sent, for example, Alderweireld shared, plus some accusations about the Red Devils’ World Cup and how he would have messed it up. “Your family dies,” the man concludes.

Alderweireld denounces this on Instagram. “There are limits to everything. I can put up with quite a bit, but threatening my family is way over it,” he writes. “I don’t understand why you are writing this and what you want to achieve with this.”

Genk responds

In the meantime, there was also a reaction from KRC Genk. The club has announced in a tweet that it distances itself from the hurtful comments. “Football lives on emotions. But such reactions are not appropriate. As a club we expressly distance ourselves from this. Our only focus in the coming weeks is on the title fight, which will be settled in a sporting way.”
