Judo Canada – Upper Austrian Grand Prix

Communiqué

Montreal, May 27, 2023 – Three athletes from Canada were in action from Thursday to Saturday at the Upper Austrian Grand Prix in Linz. None of them was able to find their way to victory during this visit to the Old Continent, but they will certainly all use this experience to continue their progress.

On the male side, Julien Frascadore was the only Canadian in action. A gold medalist at the Canadian Open Senior Championships less than a week ago, Frascadore enjoyed a first-round bye in the under-66kg draw.

The 23-year-old then met Hekim Agamammedov of Turkmenistan in the second round. Frascadore received three shidos in the clash, which gave his opponent the victory after about three minutes of the fight.

Agamammedov was subsequently defeated by Spaniard David Garcia Torne, who eventually won the gold medal in the category.

On the female side, Isabelle Harris (-63 kg) and Coralie Godbout (-78 kg) were both present on the Austrian tatami after being crowned Canadian champions last Sunday at the Center Pierre-Charbonneau in Montreal.

Opposed to the Dane Helene Christensen in the first round, Harris was surprised by the speed of execution of her opponent who managed to get the victory by ippon. Momo Tatsukawa won the all-Japanese final in the -63 kg category by defeating her compatriot Seiko Watanabe in the final.

As for Coralie Godbout, she was also defeated in her first round clash against Colombian Esteysy Diaz. The latter then lowered the flag in front of the future gold medalist, the German Anna-Maria Wagner.
