XV of France: Mohamed Haouas placed in pre-trial detention before being tried on Tuesday

Mohamed Haouas will go through prison before being judged. Placed in police custody Friday at the end of the day for domestic violence on his wife, the right pillar of the XV of France and Montpellier was brought on Sunday morning before the Montpellier prosecutor’s office. The 29-year-old player was then remanded in custody by the liberty and detention judge, according to his lawyer Marc Gallix. The latter requested release under judicial supervision pending his judgment in immediate appearance scheduled for Tuesday at the beginning of the afternoon.

But the magistrate ruled that the liabilities of the pillar, champion of France with the MHR last season, did not allow him to be released before going back to the Montpellier court. Mohamed Haouas was sentenced in February 2022 to an 18-month suspended prison sentence for a series of five burglaries perpetrated in 2014 in the Montpellier region. He also appeared in a retrial in May, this time for allegedly beating a nightclub manager with others in the same year.

He faces up to three years in prison.

The player will therefore spend the night in the prison of Villeneuve-lès-Maguelone (Hérault) before being fixed on his judicial fate in this trial for domestic violence. The tricolor international was filmed Friday at the end of the day physically attacking his wife, mother of his two children, in the heart of downtown Montpellier. Heard Saturday morning in police custody, Haouas admitted the facts.

He faces up to three years in prison and a fine of 45,000 euros. Not to mention that justice could also revoke the reprieve of his previous sentence. His wife, according to several sources familiar with the matter, did not wish to file a complaint. “In the interest of the two children, she does not want him to go to prison”, assures Me Marc Gallix.

Sportingly, his fate has also darkened. The player obviously does not appear in the group selected by Montpellier for its last Top 14 match of the season on Sunday evening in Pau. His departure for Clermont, which formalized his arrival for three years at the start of the year, is also questioned. His participation in the World Cup (September 8 – October 28) with the Blues, where Fabien Galthié had installed him as a starter at the start of his term in 2020, is also very highly uncertain.
