Werder Bremen transfers: who stays, who moves away!?

DeichStube analysis of the Werder squad

Who stays with Werder Bremen, who leaves the club in the summer? A transfer is not out of the question for Mitchell Weiser (from left), Marco Friedl, Niclas Füllkrug and Marvin Ducksch – Maximilian Philipp (right) will definitely leave Bremen again after his loan.

SV Werder Bremen must generate income from transfers in view of its liabilities next summer. But which players will leave the club? And which professionals have a future on the Weser? The DeichStube analyzes the Werder squad!

Bremen – Five goalkeepers, ten defenders, seven professionals for midfield and four attackers – this is how the SV Werder Bremen its current squad on the club’s website. For some of the players it’s time to say goodbye to the Wohninvest Weserstadion on Saturday: The last home game of the season is against 1. FC Köln (3.30 p.m. in the DeichStube live ticker). No player has been officially dismissed yet, but there are already signs of a certain upheaval, which would of course be intensified by an unlikely but still possible relegation. Who could go, who stays for sure? An analysis of DeichStube.

They stay for sure: Jiri Pavlenka (31) and Michael Zetterer (27) will continue to be the goalkeeper duo Werder Bremen form. Both have extended their contracts and have almost committed themselves to “green and white for life”. The same applies to Anthony Jung (31) and Christian Gross (34), who received another contract with Werder in the autumn of their career. Also Leonardo Bittencourt (29) only signed a new working paper this season – and Niklas Schmidt (25) has probably been sleeping in green and white bed linen for a long time. Niklas Stark (28) has, as hoped, become a top performer after moving from Hertha BSC to the Weser and appreciates his new sporting home – just like the ex-Bielefeld Amos Pieper (25). Of the goalkeepers may also Mio Backhaus (19) remain, he will be the regular goalkeeper for the U23s and number three among the pros.

Marco Friedl, Ilia Gruev and Jens Stage are more likely to stay with Werder Bremen beyond the summer than leave

Rather here than away: At Milos Veljkovic (27) there is speculation every summer whether he will leave – and then the Serb will stay. Nothing will change about that. Also at Marco Friedl (25) the next step has been expected for a long time, but so far it has not happened. Instead he became captain and has announced that he intends to stay longer. Nevertheless, interested parties could suddenly appear, even more so Ilia Gruev (23) and Jens Stage (26). The latter should already be on the notepads of some clubs in Europe due to his good second half. This has been the case for Gruev for a long time because the Bulgarian international is said to have a lot of potential as a six. At Werder Bremen he is not allowed to show it so often because Ole Werner prefers to trust Groß. The coach also emphasizes that Gruev’s future at Werder belongs to him. At Romano Schmid (23) is similar, the Austrian would also like to see more starting XI appearances and could at least prick up his ears if there was a corresponding offer.

Someone specific Fabio Chiarodia (17) is sure to hear more, because many top clubs – especially from his Italian homeland – are hot for the defensive talent of the SV Werder Bremen. Despite the exit clause, the native of Oldenburg has trusted the Werder way so far, and that’s what it looks like now. At The thorn of Salifou (19) is looking to start again with the pros after a long injury break, but a loan is not out of the question.

Attackers Niclas Füllkrug and Marvin Ducksch are likely to leave SV Werder Bremen in the summer

Probably gone: Niclas Füllkrug (30)! The national player is looking for a new challenge and wants to improve sportively and financially. At Marvin Ducksch (29) has a similar effect, an exit clause of seven million euros makes it even easier for him to change than his strike partner. Actually there would be room in the storm for Eren Dinkci (21), but he can hardly draw attention to himself – and in Justin Njinmah (22) a similar type of player is returning from his successful loan spell at Borussia Dortmund. Dinkci should be loaned out just like Lee Buchanan (22). With the Englishman, who was brought in on a free transfer, Bremen actually want to make big money at some point with a transfer back to the island – only that is difficult when Jung is always defending on the left and Buchanan is just a spectator.

On the other side is Mitchell Weiser (29) seeded and is one of the best track players in the league. Will get good offers and then be hard to keep. For Felix Agu (23) it was a season to forget. First the full-back couldn’t get past Weiser again, then he was injured. A restart as a loan player with a second division club is very likely for him. Also for Manuel Mbom (23) it should be at Werder Bremen in terms of performance, although he fought back after tearing his Achilles tendon.

Werder Bremen will not extend the contract of goalkeeper Louis Lord – Eduardo dos Santos Haesler should also go

Definitely gone: The loan from ends on June 30th Maximilian Philip (29), he has to go back to VfL Wolfsburg. That Werder Bremen The last two games have shown that he is not counting on him: Although Füllkrug was absent, Philipp was only on the bench, and a midfielder in Romano Schmid stormed in for him. Louis Lord (19) has to leave Werder, the goalkeeper’s contract will not be extended. Also keepers Eduardo dos Santos Haesler (24) shall go.

who is coming back Eight loan players will be back from July 1st Werder Bremen under contract: Oliver Burke (26/FC Millwall), Nicolai Rapp (26/1 FC Kaiserslautern), Nick Woltemade (21/SV Elversberg), Justin Njinmah (22/Borussia Dortmund), Yannik Engelhardt (22/SC Freiburg), Abdenego Nankishi (20/Heracles Almelo), Oscar Schönfelder (22/Jahn Regensburg) and Kyu-hyun Park (22/Dynamo Dresden). So far only Njinmah is scheduled for the new season. Burke is to be sold to England. Of the other loan players, only Woltemade, Engelhardt and, to a lesser extent, Park have a chance of a future at Werder. (knee)
