“Mom, if it doesn’t end well this year, I will never ride in Italy again”, Remco Evenepoel vowed before his departure for the Giro. The sequel is now known: Evenepoel won two stages and captured the pink jersey, but had to leave the Tour of Italy due to a corona infection.

Italy seems cursed for Evenepoel. Just think of his horror crash in the Tour of Lombardy and his disappointing Giro in 2021 and Tirreno-Adriatico in 2022. On top of that, he was actually criticized after his retirement in the past Tour of Italy. Quatongues claimed that he had not really tested positive for corona, but stepped out of the cycling round for fear of losing.
Despite all the setbacks, Evenepoel will return to the Tour of Italy. For example, he shared a Giro post by caretaker Anthony Pauwels on Instagram, with the text: “We’ll be back.” Followed by a pink heart, the color of the leader’s jersey. Clear language. Evenepoel is keen to show off the pink jersey on the final podium one day.
