“We have turned pressure into motivation to try to save ourselves”

All games where there is something at stake are important. However, it can be clearly stated that all that remains for the ZEV Zuazo are true endings. Since their last defeat against Granollers, the red and black now risk their lives in each match, with no margin for error. Naia Puigbó, a Biscayan pivot who has suffered the misfortune of serious injuries, in addition to defaults and the delicate sporting situation in which all of her teammates are immersed, recounts how the passengers of a ship touched, but not sunk, deal with it.

-In case of defeat tomorrow, they would certify the descent. How have you dealt with this pressure during the week?

We come from an upward dynamic in the play-down. Despite the pressure that if we lost one or two games, we would be relegated, we have done an impeccable job. Nor do we give much importance to the matter. In the heads of many players is the option of playing next year in Gold and I don’t think that this is a problem for any of them. The world does not end if we descend.

– Do you still have the hope of achieving permanence?

Clear. We have not thrown in the towel and we have not yet said the last word. I see all the players on the team with the intention of fighting until the end. As much as things go wrong, we want to compete in all the games we have left. I think we have managed to turn the situation around and turn that pressure into motivation.

-Speaking of pressure. How does a season with defaults and such a critical sporting situation affect you mentally?

Luckily, we are a very united group and we have always been able to support each other, but there are situations that do not help. People who are living away from home and who are not receiving their salary, because it leads them to desperate situations. I live at home and it’s not a big problem for me either, but people from outside have had to ask relatives for money and they didn’t even have it for the week’s purchase. So, we couldn’t concentrate one hundred percent because we were looking for life, when our main concern should have been playing.

-What do you think that the only representative from Biscay in the highest category of handball cannot even pay his staff and coaching staff?

Until we stood up, we did not give it the importance it has. When we assessed and analyzed the situation, it seemed totally crazy to us. It is the only club that is in the highest category and receives the same income as others that are three or four levels below. It is something that comes from years ago. It was time to make us value and give it a voice because we felt that they had us aside and we went unnoticed.

-In particular, all this has been coupled with several serious injuries. It will have been a tough process to deal with.

Yes a lot. It was a jug of cold water because it was a year of many changes in which Ainhoa Hernández was leaving, it had to be my season and I tore my cruciate ligament and meniscus on the first day of preseason. From the outside you can already see that it is a very long process, but until you experience it, you are not aware of all that it implies. It is to be working every day. Some days you take one step forward, other days you take two steps back. You feel that you are not advancing or not at the pace you want. It is a lot of sacrifice.

-How are you now? Do you feel one hundred percent?

Yes I am very happy. I had that low point when I tore my meniscus again in November. I didn’t think I would have to experience that situation again, but I came back quickly and the knee is no longer a problem for me. Psychologically I have completely forgotten. I am not afraid, nor am I shy about doing anything on the field and I also already have the rhythm of the competition.
