VIDEO. Insane badminton rally of 211(!) strokes in Malaysia shatters world record

Badminton at the top level often has longer rallies, but at the Malaysia Masters in Kuala Lumpur something very exceptional was seen during a women’s doubles match: a rally of 211 strokes. The audience went wild, the players too.

The Malaysian women Thinaah Muralitharan and Pearly Tan (number 11 in the world ranking) faced the Japanese pair Rena Miyaura and Ayako Sakuramoto in the round of 16. A three-minute rally stunned the crowd, the Malaysian duo celebrating the point as if they had won the world title. Muralitharan swung her racket in the air, Tan fell to the ground completely out of breath.

Official world record or not?

“Winning the rally felt like winning the race. I was too relieved that it was finally over. I really needed a break after that. I just threw my racket to get some rest,” said Muralitharan.

The Malaysian also won the match with Tan 21-17 18-21 21-19. “We were tired, but the opponents were too. I’m so happy we won that point,” said Tan, who forced the end of the rally.

With an amazing 211 strokes, the world record has been shattered, although there is no complete certainty. Last year, a rally of 195 strokes was recorded during the Korea Open, after which the global badminton association BWF saw it as a world record in competition.
