When naming the squad yesterday, Slovakia still left the door open for two potential additions from North America – 37-year-old New York Rangers goaltender Jaroslav Halak and No. 2 draft pick Shimon Nemetz, who withdrew from the Calder Cup. However, news soon followed that Nemetz has been called up to the main team of the New Jersey Devils, who eliminated the Rangers and are currently losing to the Carolina Hurricanes 0-2 in the second round.
The 19-year-old defenseman has not yet made his NHL debut, but in the AHL season he collected 34 (12+22) points and a positive utility of +13 in 65 games. Nemecd has played in two world championships (last year in eight matches 1+5) and one Olympic Games. Halaks has not yet given an answer about the world championship – he has not played in the world championships since 2011. This season, Halak participated in 25 games, shot 90.3% and allowed an average of 2.72 innings. If Halak refuses, Slovakia will go to Riga with three debutants from the local championship.
Slovakia has three players from the NHL, but all spent most of the season in the AHL. There are also three more players from Europe with NHL experience, of which Rihards Paniks of the New York “Islanders” stands out, who has 521 games and 195 (88+107) points in his NHL career. Last season Paniks mostly played in the farm club and this season he was loaned to Switzerland. Besides Panik, Peters Cehlárik (5+6 in 40 games), who started this season in Switzerland and finished in Sweden, and his clubmate Marek Hrivík, who has 24 games and three assists in the NHL, have also played in the NHL.
The largest representation in the ranks of Slovakia is from the Czech championship (10), followed by the Slovak league (7), four players are from North America, two each from Switzerland and Sweden. A year ago, when Slovakia reached the quarterfinals, seven hockey players played from this team. Libor Hudacek has the most experience in world championships, who has been to six tournaments and earned 21 (8+13) points in 44 games.
Slovakia met Switzerland (2:0, 3:2 in overtime), Czech Republic (1:5, 2:3 in the bullpen), Germany (3:4, 3:4 in overtime) and Austria (3:6, 4:3) in the preparation stage. ). Slovakia will start the World Championship on Friday against the Czech Republic, and a day later they will meet Latvia. Canada, Switzerland, Norway, Kazakhstan and Slovenia will also play in the Riga group.
