Vincent van der Voort may stop playing darts. The Dutch number 33 in the world announced on Thursday that he is experiencing motivational problems.
“At the moment I don’t enjoy it that much anymore,” says Van der Voort Viaplay. “But if I were to say right away that I’m going to stop, then I could regret it. Maybe in a few months I’ll say that I’m going to try again.”
Van der Voort became a professional at the PDC in 2007 and reached the quarter-finals of the World Darts Championship in 2011 and 2015. The 47-year-old Purmerender took five PDC ProTour titles. He has suffered from a weak back for years.
“Now I’m dropping in the world rankings. That has to do with several factors, including a bit of motivation,” he says. “I am now looking at whether I still want to continue. I will make the decision in the coming months.”
Four months ago, Van der Voort stranded in the fourth round of the World Darts Championship. ‘The Dutch Destroyer’ lost 4-3 in London to Luke Humphries, the number six of the Order of Merit. His last appearance dates from April 16, when he was defeated by German Gabriel Clemens (6-2) in the second round at Players Championship 10.
After three weeks of vacation, Van der Voort will be back at the oche next week. “At the moment I train much less. Normally it would itch towards a tournament, but I don’t have that now.”
