Ulm wins again at Alba Berlin – SWR Sport

A terrific performance – and that without head coach Anton Gavel: Ratiopharm Ulm defeated Alba Berlin 93:81 in the third playoff game and took a 2:1 lead in the series.

However, Ulm lost their coach in the first quarter. After exactly six minutes and 19 seconds of play, Anton Gavel was penalized with a technical foul for complaining to the referees. After that, Gavel continued to discuss, and promptly there was the next technical foul. According to the regulations, he then has to leave the hall. Assistant coach Tyron McCoy has to take over.

Ratiopharm Ulm loses first quarter

There is a lot of piecework, little flow, little rhythm, lots of fouls on both sides in this first quarter. After an 11:11 score and the Ulm head coach being disqualified, Alba pulled away. Ulm misses open distance shots and is 20:27 behind after the first section.

At the beginning of the second quarter, Ulm shook and suddenly played freely. The threes fall. With an 11:0 run, the guests take the lead 31:27. The Berliners also show nice moves. But the ratiopharm team is starting to do magic. Brilliant passes, great long-range hits. Ulm’s lead increases to eleven points (49:38). Can the outsider Ulm actually win a second time at the reigning German champions – and without his coach? Things are looking good at half-time: 53:46 for Ulm. Sports director Thorsten Leibenath: “We turned our anger and frustration into energy.”

Ulm’s lead increases to 14 points

The 10,800 spectators in Berlin’s Mercedes-Benz Arena first had to watch how their team still couldn’t really stop the ratiopharm basket hunters. With a long-range hit by Brandon Paul, the Ulm team extend their lead to 14 points (68:54). Time out Alba. The German champion catches up again afterwards.

The ratiopharm team remains highly concentrated until the end

The guests go into the final quarter with a six-point lead (75:69). It’s going to be exciting, intense, hard-fought, with great action from both sides. But the Ulmer remain alert overall in defense, making the throws difficult for the Berliners. The Swabians, who played strongly, were able to fend off the last attempts to rear up and in the end won a well-deserved 93:81.

This gives ratiopharm Ulm the chance in game four next Wednesday to throw Alba Berlin out of the playoffs with a home win and to move into the semi-finals for the German championship.
