The president of the Uruguayan Football Association, Ignacio Alonso, in a one-on-one with FútbolUy, referred to the performance of the sky blue team in the U-20 World Cup in Argentina where he said: “we are at home.”
Alonso began by referring to the good 4-0 victory against Iraq in the debut that gives another peace of mind to face the next steps in the competition and mentioned: “it was a joy and tranquility because the first match is key to win to have less pressure and that it is transferred to the rivals”.
“It is the capital that we achieved after the debut,” he asserted and completed: “it also served to measure up against teams from different confederations and know where we stand.”
Asked about the advisability of the World Cup being played in Argentina after the cancellation of the primary venue that was going to be in Indonesia, he analyzed: “when it came up that it could be here, beyond wanting to support something that would have been beautiful (it did not materialize), we knew that it was very favorable for Uruguay. Not only because of transfers, time zone, weather, but because we are in a place that is like home. He favored us and he is going to favor us more”.
Regarding the interest that this U-20 squad aroused with the fans, with whom there is a great coming and going, Alonso did not hesitate to comment: “it is a team that made itself, based on a lot of effort, hours of work , labor and concentration”.
“When they traveled to South America (from Colombia, where they were vice-champions) on January 15, there were very few of us who were saying goodbye to them and when they arrived the people had taken them as their own, with total affection and idolatry,” he recalled and expanded: “that was they won it on the field. It was also what prompted all the public who came to La Plata to follow and support them, in addition to those who are going to arrive”.
