This is how Wolff-Christoph Fuss experienced the drama of Borussia Dortmund

“Maybe it would have been too cheesy”

Terzic’s bitter conclusion: “We didn’t need that today”

Wolff-Christoph Fuss commented on the BVB drama against Mainz live from Dortmund. How he experienced the game – and where he classifies it in comparison to other title decisions.

He brought the Dortmund drama live to German pubs and living rooms.

Football commentator Wolff-Christoph Fuss followed BVB’s match against Mainz 05 on the 34th matchday Sky from the Signal Iduna Park – and experienced the black and yellow failure up close together with around 81,000 other spectators in the stands.

Even for the seasoned reporter, it was an extraordinary game in a rare scenario.

Fuss spoke about half an hour after the final whistle SPORTS1 about Sébastien Haller’s missed shot, the dramaturgy of the championship final between BVB and Bayern and the comparison with previous title decisions on the last matchday.

“Memorable season finale”

SPORT1: Mr. Fuss, how did you experience it here today?

Wolff-Christoph Fuss: The game here? mad, mad! At some point I said in between, it basically brought the championship race back to the point in 90 minutes. In front, back, the others, but in front again, then Cologne, then Bayern, then Mainz – that actually reflected the championship race in the season quite well.

SPORT1: Wouldn’t it have been the perfect punchline if both hadn’t won, as hard as they’ve struggled all season?

Fuss: That would have been the perfect punch line, yes. (laughs) In the end I also thought that the last ball would fly in at the front – and then Modeste would do another one. Or Reus makes one, there’s still a punch line. But the very, very, very last punchline, that’s going to be different at some point.

SPORT1: Sébastien Haller could have steered the game in a different direction with his penalty. Was that too much of a good thing in the end?

Fuss: Maybe it would have been too cheesy. But he hasn’t missed that many penalties in his life – he definitely scored more than he missed. It was an exceptional finish and a memorable season finale.

“… actually it was even crazier than in Unterhaching”

SPORT1: Was it the craziest thing you’ve experienced?

Fuss: It was very crazy! I’ve done a few crazy season finales before, but it was maybe the craziest since in the championship race (considers) … actually it was even crazier than in Unterhaching (in the 1999/2000 season, editor’s note)! Because in Unterhaching everything was actually clear. Here you thought: how long does he keep replaying? Just a minute? And another minute? One very last minute?

SPORT1: So would you say it topped both 2000 and the Schalke drama in 2001?

Fuss: Yes, it was probably the craziest season finale.
