The dismay at Soudal-Quick Step was great when Remco Evenepoel had to go home with corona after the first week. But the team’s agony didn’t stop there. Two days later, four more riders got off sick: Cattaneo, Cerny, Hirt and Vervaeke.

And now, after the second rest day, Davide Ballerini is also sick. The team now has two riders. Two Belgians: Ilan Van Wilder and Pieter Serry.

Van Wilder is currently 16th in the overall standings at 7’32” from the leader. But his only helper to try and defend that spot is Serry from now on.
