The Saeima will call on the security authorities to evaluate the activities of former hockey player Kerch on “Victory Day”

After listening to Rozi, the head of the commission Ingmārs Līdaka (AS) called on the factions of the Saeima to consider whether amendments to the Citizenship Law would be necessary in order to try to change the text of the promise.

Also, on behalf of the Pidaka Commission, the security authorities will ask the security authorities to evaluate Kerch’s case, whether there are any signs of crime in his activities. “If the authorities see grounds for starting criminal proceedings, it would make it difficult for this person to move elsewhere in Europe,” Līdaka added.

Already after the commission meeting, the VDD indicated to the LETA agency that the VDD, according to its competence, had already evaluated the post published by Kerch’s “Facebook”.

In the opinion of the VDD, the post published by Kerch does not contribute to the cohesion of Latvian society, it is potentially offensive and provocative to those Latvian residents who are reminded of the occupation of Latvia by the Soviet Union and the repression of the Latvian people on May 9. At the same time, in the specific case, the service did not establish the composition of a criminal offense.

In addition, the service drew attention to the fact that cases related to military aggression and the use of symbols glorifying war crimes in public space are being investigated by the State Police. The specific case should also be assessed in the sense of the Law on Administrative Penalties on Violations in the Field of Administration, Public Order and Use of the State Language.

Kerch became a citizen of Latvia in June 1997, when the parliament granted citizenship to several hockey players for special merits for Latvia. Kerčs played in the Latvian hockey team from the time it was formed in the fall of 1992 until the spring of 2004.
