It’s Teddy Riner’s big comeback at the World Championships. The tatami star is in Doha where the competition ends this weekend. He fights this Saturday in the heavyweight category. Since his 10th world title, acquired in 2017, Riner had not played in the world championships.

Already six years that Teddy Riner has not been engaged in the World Championships. Six years during which the winning machine showed weaknesses. His body takes the hit as the age advances and in the middle of his XXL record, defeats have been invited.

Teddy Riner especially thinks of the Olympics

Of course, at 34 years old, Teddy “Winer” has not yet become Grandpa Teddy, but he is no longer the dominant male on the tatami mats. “Frankly, there are some who have had less luck than me in old age. Really, I am very happy. At my age, after all these years, having so much fun on the mat… I don’t know not so many who were able to have this chance!”, he congratulates himself.

What drives Teddy Riner more than anything else is the goal of Olympic Games in Paris. These World Championships, as he says himself, will allow him to “position himself in relation to the competition”. Obviously, he would prefer to glean an 11th world title but what he especially does not want, “is to arrive at the Games and miss out on this event”.
